Do The Thing You Think You Cannot Do
Thursday, May 29th, 2008This post is unduly (well, not really!) influenced by Martha Beck (my personal mentor in the world of coaching) and her new book, Steering By Starlight.
Rather than go into all the reason I love this book ( you can read about that in this week’s newsletter), I’d like to share one of her amazingly insightful strategies.
Martha’s passion and gift is getting people to their best destiny. One thing that Martha and I both hear a lot from our clients is “I’m just too scared to do X or try X or find out about X”. “What would people think if I tried Y or did Y or investigate Y?”Sadly, fear prevents more people than I care to think about from reaching the fabulous destiny that is waiting for them.
So, here is my question for you: What is the thing you think you cannot do? It could be a conversation you need to have, a strategy you need to try, a resource you want to investigate. It could be anything that you keep telling yourself you want to do, but you just “can’t”.
Write it down.
Now, write down three very very small steps you are willing to take toward that thing. I mean so small that you look at it and say “Well of course I can do that.” Any other response means the step is too big.
Commit to completing just one of the small steps you wrote down this week. Just one.
After you finish that one, consider taking the next one. And then the next. Forward motion of any kind toward “the thing you think you cannot do ” packs a powerful punch. Momentum sets in, and the taste of success - however small - seems to override the fear.
Try it and let me know how it goes:)
If you find yourself “stuck” and aren’t sure what three small steps you should take, consider joining my next tele-class - 5 Emergency Steps to Getting Yourself Unstuck. You can check out the details here: http://www.directsellingleaders
