Do The Thing You Think You Cannot Do

Thursday, May 29th, 2008

This post is unduly (well, not really!) influenced by Martha Beck (my personal mentor in the world of coaching) and her new book, Steering By Starlight.

Rather than go into all the reason I love this book ( you can read about that in this week’s newsletter), I’d like to share one of her amazingly insightful strategies.

Martha’s passion and gift is getting people to their best destiny.  One thing that Martha and I both hear a lot from our clients is “I’m just too scared to do X or try X or find out about X”.  “What would people think if I tried Y or did Y or investigate Y?”Sadly, fear prevents more people than I care to think about from reaching the fabulous destiny that is waiting for them.

So, here is my question for you: What is the thing you think you cannot do? It could be a conversation you need to have, a strategy you need to try, a resource you want to investigate.  It could be anything that you keep telling yourself you want to do, but you just “can’t”.

Write it down.

Now, write down three very very small steps you are willing to take toward that thing.  I mean so small that you look at it and say “Well of course I can do that.” Any other response means the step is too big.

Commit to completing just one of the small steps you wrote down this week.  Just one.

After you finish that one, consider taking the next one. And then the next.  Forward motion of any kind toward “the thing you think you cannot do ” packs a powerful punch.  Momentum sets in, and the taste of success - however small - seems to override the fear.

Try it and let me know how it goes:)

If you find yourself “stuck” and aren’t sure what three small steps you should take, consider joining my next tele-class - 5 Emergency Steps to Getting Yourself Unstuck.  You can check out the details here: http://www.directsellingleaders.com/5EmergencyUnstuck.html.

Planning some Summer Travel this year? Why not build a National team while you’re on vacation? What’s the best way to spread the word about your business? First, you have to be passionate about what you do and about sharing it with others. Be sure you’re clear about why you love your job before you pack for your next trip. The more passionate you are, the more you’ll actually want to share!

Remembering what is truly important

Monday, May 26th, 2008

As I sit looking out over the lake this Memorial Day morning, I can’t help but think of how grateful I am for all that I have in my life today.

And, more importantly, how grateful I am for those who served, and who are currently serving. All gave some – some gave all.

I like to take some time to reflect on what is truly important to me. It’s really not about success, money or possessions. It’s about my life.

Am I really enjoying that which I am doing? Am I getting to spend my time doing things that matter with those that I love?

My coaching, writing & speaking is focused on making a difference for those who desire more support from their other half in their businesses. It really isn’t about the business – it is about the relationship.

How the most important person in your life interacts with you and shares in that which is important to you.

Does it really matter if your partner really understands your business, as long as they simply believe in you? How does it make you feel when they choose to spend a Saturday with you at a business event just because they wanted to spend time with you?

For me that is what it is all about. And that which I strive to remember at all times.

Are You Empowering or Disempowering Yourself?

Wednesday, May 21st, 2008

Hi there!

This past weekend I was the featured trainer at the annual conference for a direct selling company.  I love working with direct sellers in person so - needless to say - I had a great time.

In the process, I also reconnected with one of the most debilitating scarcity patterns or habits direct sellers have - and it sabotages their success (and yours!) all the time.  It goes right back to what I wrote about in my last blog, i.e., that your internals create your externals.

Let me give you an experience of what I’m talking about right now.

What do you see below?

 IAMNOWHERE

Did you FIRST see the words “I am nowhere” or “I am now here”?

Let’s explore and learn from this a little more…

When you see the words “I am nowhere” – what happens to your energy?   How powerful do you feel?   How motivated are you to take action?

Now – contrast that with your response when you see the words “I am now here”.

When you see the words “I am now here” – what happens to your energy?   How powerful do you feel?   How motivated are you to take action?

That being said, did anything on your computer screen change?   Did the IAMNOWHERE letters magically move around or change color so as to produce the shift in your energy, power and ability to act?

Of course not!

The ONLY thing that changed was how you SAW them!   The EXTERNALS didn’t change in the least!

What changed - and what made a difference in terms of your sense of empowerment (or disempowerment) - was how you SAW the externals!   The thought you had - your perception - changed and that made all the difference in the world!

Here’s my point - and it’s the same point I emphasized repeatedly in my training this past weekend.

If you’ve been thinking (even subconsciously) that when you are making $$$$ money in your business, THEN you’ll feel confident, empowered and abundant - you’ve got it backwards.

If you’re thinking that making the next level in your compensation plan, getting out of debt, quitting the job you hate, moving into your dream house, etc. etc. is what’s going to have you feel confident, empowered and abundant - you’re saying that the Externals Create the Internals!  Not only is that the EXACT OPPOSITE of how things work - it’s a SET-UP for scarcity.

Changing the externals is not what’s going to make the biggest difference in terms of you experiencing scarcity and/or abundance.  What WILL make the difference is how you PERCEIVE those externals (current and future) and what you THINK about them.

One of the oldest and most powerful principles of success and abundance tells us this…

What you FOCUS on the most is where your energy will flow and is what will show up and grow in your life.

So, my friend, my question for you today is this…

What are you FOCUSING on in your business and your life?  Are you focusing on scarcity, not enough and “I am nowhere”?

Or are you SEEING things differently… focusing on the progress, success and abundance you’ve already experienced?

Are you judging your current actions, progress, and results as “not enough” and “nowhere” - or are you able to drop your judgment and see your “reality” in a way that empowers you to take action, i.e., “I am now here”?

This one shift (which you can consciously train yourself to make) will have a huge impact in your business and all areas of your life.

So much so that I’m going to continue focusing on it (no pun intended!) in my next blog.

Until then, begin paying attention to your FOCUS and how you are SEEING yourself and your results, i.e., “I Am Nowhere” or “I Am Now Here”?

The choice is yours.  Your external results do not have to change for you to feel more empowered and motivated - your internals do.

“Talk” to you soon!

Core Coaching: The art of allowing

Friday, May 16th, 2008

My coaching in the world of success together gives me an interesting perspective on all the training & philosophies that I am exposed to.

The majority of all information is intended to be applicable to you. Obviously, the only thing that you truly have any control over is yourself – in this moment. The past is history, the future yet to unfold and you have no real control over anything outside of yourself.

My personal journey is currently focusing on greatness and abundance.

Both of which are a state of being. Essentially, they just ‘are’. There is nothing to change, fix or acquire. You allow yourself to be that which you are and to be your authentic self.

As a Coach, I see people in their greatness, and I hold them in that space when we interact.

When you realize this for yourself, and you allow yourself to be in your greatness, it is an empowering and releasing event.

Here is where it gets good. All that you are embracing for yourself is also applicable to others in your experience. Especially, your significant other.

What would happen if you accepted him exactly as he is and practiced allowing him to be so. Not that he actually needs your permission to be who he is, allowing relieves you of any expectation that he be a certain way, or resistance to who he actually is.

Just as you are learning to look at yourself and see the greatness that is yours, look at others to see the greatness that is within them.

And, when you see it, be appreciative of it, and let them know what you see.

If your other half is not sharing the journey of enlightenment that you are, they may not have any understanding of what you are referring to.

And, that is okay. The more you practice the art of allowing – for both yourself and others – the more ease you will experience in your interactions.
Embracing the many concepts & philosophies and incorporating them into your own life can be a challenge. My coaching provides guidance and insights in applying the concepts to your life and your relationships.

What’s your thermostat set at?

Friday, May 9th, 2008

Hi there!

This morning it occurred to me that I have been “putting the cart before the horse” in most of my blog posts.

I have a tendency to do that - you know, jump right in headfirst! J

Well, this morning I realized that I have been “blogging” away now for months but NOT ONCE did I tell you why reading and learning from my blog is so important for you and your business success.  So - better late than never - let me do so now.

First, please understand that I’ve been making some assumptions about you… without checking them out.  Here are some things I’ve been ASSUMING about you.  You tell me - are they accurate?

  • I think that you want to experience and attract greater levels of success, wealth and abundance than you currently have.
  • I think you want your business to grow.
  • I’m going to bet that you want to make more money and, eventually, to experience lasting financial freedom.
  • I also think I can safely say that you want to be able to enjoy your life - while you’re growing your business and even if, one day, you stop actively growing your business.
  • I’m also willing to guess that you not only want all of these things for yourself - but that you also want your direct selling friends, associates and team members to experience the same thing.
  • Most of all, I going to guess that you’d just as soon experience these things, (i.e., success, freedom, joy, wealth and abundance) sooner versus later - with as much EASE as possible

Well - have I been assuming accurately or inaccurately?

(Seriously, please do REPLY in the box provided below and tell me if my assumptions are accurate or inaccurate!  That’s the only way I can really know what will support you!)Because - if I’ve been accurate - then I want you to know that all of this is possible - with EASE - provided you’re willing to make some shifts in how you’re approaching your business, your money and your life. And I’m not just talking in terms of your actions!  Far too often, direct sellers think that all they need to do is to take NEW, DIFFERENT and/or BETTER ACTIONS and their business will grow and thrive! (Believe me, I know this one ALL TOO WELL…and it doesn’t work!)And that’s because thinking that is in violation of one of the fundamental and universal laws that applies to the natural world - AND to your business!Simply put, it states that:

The Internals Create the Externals

Claiming it for yourself is much more empowering, however.  When you do, it sounds like this:

MY Internals Create MY Externals

In other words, all of the conscious and subconscious thoughts, beliefs, emotions, experiences and expectations you have are - bottom line - what influences the actions you do (and do not!) take.  While your actions most directly impact your results - what ultimately makes the biggest difference is not your action - is the sum total of the thoughts, energy and emotions that PRECEDE your action!

In many ways, your internals - and they may be conscious or subconscious - act like a thermostat.

If your thermostat is set for 58 degrees, it’s pretty safe to say that the temperature in the room is going to be pretty close to 58 degrees.

If you wanted the room to be warmer, you could jump into ACTION and start building fires in the fireplaces and start baking bread in the oven and, at least temporarily, it would seem to work - the room would feel warmer.

But then what would happen?

You bet!  The thermostat would take over and turn on the air conditioning and start cooling the room back down to 58 degrees!

Talk about struggle, huh?  Talk about wasting time and energy and even money, huh?

But if you simply turned the thermostat up to 68 degrees, the thermostat would turn on the heater and the room would start warming up - EASILY - and would stay warm.

Your INTERNALS (conscious AND subconscious) are like that thermostat in your life.  They impact your actions and they impact your results.

And that’s why reading and learning from this blog is so critical for your own success and that of your associates.  Because my commitment to you is to have my blog posts support you to “program your internal thermostat for abundance”.

And that will make taking the actions you’ll learn from the other DSL experts all the more powerful and effective!I’ll continue that process in my next blog post… between now and then, I highly recommend you re-read some of my earlier posts (especially the ones addressing “money messages”) to see which ones are affecting the setting of your internal thermostat!

Enjoy your day!

Great Tips for Summertime Success

Wednesday, May 7th, 2008

It always surprises me when I hear a client dreading the Summer months. There is an assumption in the direct sales profession that representatives struggle during summer to get bookings and experience success in their direct sales businesses. Here are some reasons why you don’t have to “buy into” that myth this summer:

  • Summertime is kid-focused for busy moms (your target market) and that means now, more than ever, they and their friends need a break! That’s what a party with you is all about!
  • The weather is great and theme parties are more fun to plan (especially outdoor parties)
  • Many of us travel in the summer, making it an ideal opportunity to either sponsor as we travel or host parties in new demographic areas, thus building a national team!

Our May newsletter is dedicated to your summertime success. There are tons of tips for maximizing your results and making this your best summer yet in your direct sales business. Click here to check it out!

Ask for what you want

Monday, May 5th, 2008

If you’ve been trying to get your other half interested in your business, and nothing seems to be working, it may be time to shift tactics.

After all, if your selling or recruiting was on a plateau, you would be open to new strategies, right?

In previous posts, we have covered the importance of owning your own success and knowing that you are not dependent upon the participation of your partner.

The key shift to make right now is to stop explaining your business to him and simply ask him for assistance when something comes up that you would like a hand with.

Ie: If you’re loading the car to attend a show, ask him to help you carry the boxes out to the car. And then appreciate him for it.

If you are short on time and you have an errand or chore that needs attention, ask him if can get it done for you.

See where we are going? It’s not about your business any more – it’s you asking him to do things for YOU. Which of course, he loves to do and loves to be appreciated for.

If he is hesitant to get involved with the business for some reason, it’s something to do with the business – it’s not about you.

Granted, it may feel like that if your business is the key to your future together and you are really excited about it.

Something to consider – there may have been a point in time where you felt the same way about your partner that you do about your business now.

If your biz is now taking all your free time, and it’s all you talk about, where does he fit in?

One of the core concepts of relationships is to ensure the most important person in your life feels like they are the most important person in your life. And, yes – guys have feelings as well.

My mantra is “Put the ‘us’ in business”. In reality, it’s ‘us’ first, because without that, nothing else really matters.

Maintain a focus on the relationship that you want, and the support will follow.
Knowing where to start making shifts in your relationship can be a daunting process. I created my new program Relationships Unlimited to give you the insights and resources to make the shifts to get your relationship to where you want it to be.
